India's recurve men's team clinches gold at Archery World Cup 2024, defeating Korea after 14 years

Archery - Olympics: Day 5
Indian archer Tarundeep Rai won gold medal in the men's recurve team event

The Indian men's recurve team at the Archery World Cup, consisting of Tarundeep Rai, Dhiraj Bommadevara, and Pravin Jadhav, achieved a historic victory by defeating top-ranked Korea for the first time and securing the gold medal.

The win came against Korea's World and Asian Games champion team, including Olympic champions Kim Je Deok and Kim Woojin, with a score of 5-1 (57-57, 57-55, 55-53) in the final. This win marked India's triumph in the men's team event at a World Cup stage after a gap of 14 years.

The trio's accomplishment will bolster their confidence as they prepare for the final Olympic qualifier in Antalya in June. Additionally, it will contribute to India's ranking points, positioning the team more favorably for potential qualification through world rankings if they are unable to secure a spot in Paris 2024 via the qualifier.

Dhiraj, who has qualified for the Olympics, partnered with Ankita Bhakat to secure the mixed team bronze medal by defeating Mexico's Matias Grande and Alejandra Valencia with a commanding score of 6-0 (35-31, 38-35, 39-37).

Deepika Kumari shines with silver at Archery World Cup 2024

Deepika Kumari, who made a comeback to global events after her motherhood in December 2022, secured an individual silver medal. She defeated Korean Jeon Hunyong 6-4 in the quarterfinal and then outclassed debutant Nam Suhyeon with a perfect score of 6-0 (29-28, 29-27, 28-26) in the semifinals.

However, in the title clash, Deepika faced tough competition from World and Asian Games champion Lim Sihyeon from the same country and finished with a silver after a score of 6-0 (27-26, 29-27, 28-27). Despite shooting without a coach due to a penalty faced by India, Deepika's performance earned her a silver medal, which will be beneficial for her preparations leading up to the final Olympic qualifier.

India clinched eight medals at the Archery World Cup 2024, including an impressive five gold medals. Based on the number of gold medals secured across various World Cups, India is placed sixth in the all-time rankings of medals won at the Archery World Cup. India has accumulated 35 gold medals at the Archery World Cup.
