World Archery Championships 2013: Deepika Kumari, Rajat Chauhan impress in first 2 rounds of individual events

Deepika Kumari and Rajat Chauhan were amongst 7 Indian archers to reach the 1/16 elimination round at the World Archery Championships

The first two elimination rounds for the individual events in both the recurve and compound categories took place on Wednesday at the World Archery Championships 2013, Antalya, Turkey.

Barring the women’s compound event, the Indians had a good day in the other 3 elimination play-offs led by the compound men who were buoyed by Rajat Chauhan who delivered the biggest upset of the day when he took out the champion from the recent World Cup Final, Denmark’s Martin Damsbo, in the 1/24 eliminations.

Rajat Chauhan, who qualified in 46th place, had earlier beaten Renaud Domanski (67th) in the 1/48 eliminations by a narrow 1-point margin 147:146.

But nobody expected the shock that he was to deliver in the next round, where in another tight contest he took out Damsbo, again by a single point 143:142, in extremely blustery conditions.

Abhishek Verma (31st) also won both his eliminations as he beat Akos Varga (82nd) in the 1/48 round followed by a victory over Elmaagacli Demir (34th) in the 1/24 round. Sandeep Kumar though bowed out in the 1/48 round with a loss to Min Lihong of Korea in a tie-breaker after being level on 145 points each.

Deepika Kumari won both her matches as well with relative ease after beating relatively lower-ranked opponents in Anete Kreicberga and Wioleta Myszor.

Dola Banerjee also put in a strong showing as she joined Deepika after winning both her rounds. After beating Elena Mousikou of Cyprus in the 1/48 round, Dola got past Ana Maria Rendon of Colombia 6-0, who had qualified 16th.

Chekrovolu Swuro’s forgettable World Championships got worse as she lost in the 1/48 stage to Bishindee Urantungalag.

The men also kept up their fine shooting. After having qualified in 2nd place in the team event, the trio of Tarundeep Rai, Jayanta Talukdar and Kapil all won their matches in both the 1/48 and 1/24 to make the men’s individual recurve the only event where all three archers progressed.

The 1/16 eliminations will take place on Thursday and at the end of the day the semi-finalists will be determined.
