Krishna Poonia crosses Olympic qualification A mark with season's best 62.25m

Krishna Poonia brings hopes and smiles for Indian fans

Krishna Poonia, India’s leading discuss thrower, continues her string of impressive performances. Krishna, gold medal winner at the last Commonwealth Games, won gold medal at the Halloween Throws Meet at Portland, US today. Her throw of 62.25 meters is her best in this season.

Poonia is now at the peak of her career. Just four days ago, she secured a berth for her in the London Olympics 2012 by bagging gold at Fling Throw Meet in Portland, US. Her qualification for London Olympics was a result of crossing the Olympic qualification ‘B’ standard mark of 59.50m. Poonia threw 61.12m on that day.

Poonia had even better performance today in store. With her today’s performance, she crossed the Olympic qualification A mark of 62m. Poonia achieved this mark on her third and last attempt. However, Poonia’s personal best stands at 63.69m which she attained last year. Krishna had won the gold at Commonwealth Games at Delhi with an effort of 61.51 metres.

Krishna can reach the 65 m mark with more practice and hard work, believes his husband-cum-coach. Virender Poonia, Krishna’s guide, coach and husband has been with India’s leading Olympic medal prospect during her training at the Throws Centre at Concordia University at Oregon, Portland for last 4 months.

Krishna was awarded the Padma shri, India’s 4th highest civilian award, this year. She was also the recipient of Arjuna Award in 2010.
