Mersin (Turkey), June 25 (IANS) Badminton Tuesday scored another first by debuting at the 17th Mediterranean Games here.

The tourney, being played at the Mersin University Sports Hall No.1, will last till June 30.

Players from 11 of the 24 participating nations – Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey – will compete for top honours in four categories — men’s and women’s singles as well as men’s and women’s doubles.

Mixed doubles has been omitted from the Games replicating what happened when badminton debuted in Olympics in 1992 in Barcelona. The category was first included at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
