Gurusaidutt thrashes world 9, No. 9, Saina and Ajay Jayram also through to the quarters

This 21 year old boy has created the history by defeating the world No. 9 Du Pengyu of China in the Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open 2011 on Thursday. This Indian badminton star, who happens to be unseeded in the tournament and is also ranked 51 in the world defeated the 7th seeded Chinese player by beating him 15-21, 21-7, 21-13 in about an hour.

Gurusaidutt R.M.V. who trains in Hyderabad at the ‘Gopichand Badminton Academy’ and is supported by ‘Olympic Gold Quest’ won the Bronze medal at the World Junior Badminton Championships back in 2008. Gurusaidutt also won the Gold medal in the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008. Gurusaidutt first came into the limelight when he defeated the former All England Badminton Champion Muhammad Hafiz Hashim in 2010.

He will now play world No. 2 Long Chen of China on Friday. Its not all impossible to defeat Long Chen but he needs to play the best game of his life to overcome the Chinese player.

Sania moves to the next round

Saina Nehwal also cleared the 2nd round with ease. Saina defeated Jie Yao of Netherlands 21-17, 21-17 in a match which lasted for just about 38 minutes. Yao who defeated Xin Liu of China in the first round was completely out of form in this match. Saina will now play world No. 7 Tine Baun of Denmark in the quarters on Friday. Saina will also be playing in the Li Ning China Open which will be starting from 22nd of this month.

Jayaram seeks revenge

Ajay Jayaram who defeated the world No. 6 Japanese player Sho Sasaki in the first round, continued his winning streak in the 2nd round and defeated Muhammad Hafiz Hashim of Malaysia by beating him 21-16, 21-15. Jayaram will now play the current World Champion Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the quarterfinal. The World No. 1 has already defeated the Indian player in the Yonex Sunrise India open in April.

But there was also some disappointment for the Indians in the men’s singles, as Kashyap Parupalli and in mixed doubles V. Diju and Jwala Gutta lost their respective matches.

Kashyap Parupalli lost to the 3rd seeded Lin Dan of China in a tough 3 setter by 16-21,21-17 and 21-14. Lin Dan who won the gold medal in the world Championships in August was given a very tough fight by the India’s No. 1 player but at the end it was the Chinese player who won the match.

Also in the mixed doubles the Indian pair of V.Diju and Jwala Gutta lost to the world No. 2, Chinese pair of Chen Xu and Jin Ma by 21-18, 21-17 in the Indian Open.
