After the super success of the inaugural session of Indian Badminton League, the chairman of Indian Badminton Association Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta gave indications of some changes in the upcoming seasons of Indian Badminton League (IBL). The very first season of Indian Badminton League is an adorable success. The league took place last month from 14th August to 31st August with Hyderabad Hotshots clinching the title. A total of 6 teams participated in this tournament with Hyderabad Hotshots and Awadhe Warriors making it to the Top-2.

Indian Badminton League followed the footsteps of the Sudirman Cup format but the first season of IBL included an additional match of Men’s singles instead of Women’s doubles match. For a team battle, a single day clash involved five matches with two men’s singles match, one women’s singles match, one men’s doubles and one mixed doubles match, played one after the other.

As per Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta, Women’s doubles and review system may be a part of the next season of this tournament. He further gave a stress on the importance of women’s doubles and proposed to include it in an IBL format as per the suitability and need of time.

As noticed in some matches of IBL this season, some decisions turned controversial. This disheartened the players and fan followers. To improve upon the existing rules, there is scope for the introduction of the referral system in decision making to assure correct decisions and satisfaction of players. It was presented as a proposal by the president of BAI to the General body meeting.

By observing even better than anticipated results, there is also a suggestion of increasing the number of teams in the upcoming season. As there is interest from a large number of entrepreneurs in IBL, it is expected to come next year as an eight or nine teams’ show. The league is certainly expected to prove as an improved package with thrilling game with these provisions.

In the end, he clarified that these provisions are a mere reflection of his own thoughts and has no direct relation with the IBL. He further added that these changes are dependent on situations to come.
