2013 FIBA ASIA Championship: Iran, Philippines enter final, book ticket to SPAIN 2014

Iran and Philippines book their ticket to the SPAIN 2014 FIBA World Cup after reaching the final of the 2013 FIBA ASIA Championship for Men at Manila, Philippines. Iran relied on their defense to defeat Chinese Taipei, 79-60, in the semifinal round of the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship while hosts Philippines defeated South Korea, 86-79, in another semifinal of the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship to earn berth in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Mahdi Kamrany, Iran’s veteran point guard, scored 19 points and added six rebounds and six assists. Hamed Hadadi added 17 points and 14 rebounds for Iran, while Oshin Sahakian chipped in 13 points and eight boards for Iran. Davis top-scored for Chinese Taipei with 10 points. Iran were down by 14-23 in the first quarter but managed to pull back the lead to 41-35 at the halftime while Iran were in lead with 60-39 at the end of the third quarter and rallied to win the match 79-60 and earn place in the final and also ticket to the SPAIN 2014.

Meanwhile, the hosts Philippines were 19-23 down at the end of the first quarter while still trailing by 36-39 in the halftime. Philippines managed to pull the lead by 65-56 at the end of the third quarter and ran away with the 86-79 win to enter final and earn place in the SPAIN 2014. Castro led Philippines with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jimmy Alapag nailed points for then hosts. Kim Mingoo led Korea with 27 points off the bench while Yang Donggeun and Kim Joo-sung added 11 points apiece for Korea.

Korea will now face Chinese Taipei in the 3rd place match and most importantly for a ticket to the SPAIN 2014. Only three teams from FIBA ASIA are qualified for the FIBA World Cup.
