Ryan Turell is attempting to make history in the NBA as the league's first Orthodox Jewish player. It's been a remarkable journey for the former Division III star, and Turell is hoping it's only just begun.
At 6-foot-7, the talented forward started to generate buzz in NBA circles with his play in the NCAA last season. Turell played for Yeshiva, a division III school based in New York City. During his senior season, Turell averaged 27.3 points per game while shooting 58.7%, including 46.8% from 3-point range.
Over the span of his four seasons at Yeshiva, he averaged 23.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Although he went undrafted in June, teams were still intrigued with the talented forward.

Turell was the 27th overall selection in the G League draft. He was selected by the Motor City Cruise, who are the affiliate of the Detroit Pistons. On Monday night, Turell made his professional debut in the team's home opener against the Windy City Bulls.

During his final year in college, Turell led all divisions of NCAA basketball in scoring. He has the ability to score from multiple levels, which is proven by his impressive percentages at the collegiate ranks.
Due to his religious practices, Turell observes the Sabbath, which occurs every week from Sundown Friday night to Saturday. This means that during that span, Turell cannot use technology or travel. Because of that realization, it's presented some challenges when it comes to being a part of a basketball team.
Despite those challenges, the Detroit Pistons organization has taken an interest in seeing what the talented forward can do on the court. Turell's G League debut is the first step towards a successful career on the hardwood.
The Motor City Cruise are expected to play next on Thursday, which will give Ryan Turell, a native of California, another opportunity to showcase his ability.

Ryan Turell is one of the players starring in the two-hour documentary Destination NBA: A G League Odyssey on Prime Video. It is set to premiere on August 8 in more than 240 countries and territories around the world, as per Cleveland Jewish News.
The documentary follows several G League players who are looking to fulfill their dreams of making it to the NBA. In addition to Turell, players such as Scoot Henderson, Denzel Valentine and Gabe York will also be featured.
