Kyrie Irving's step-mom, Shetellia Riley Irving, will have her work cut out for her in the days to come leading up to the NBA trade deadline. With Kyrie's recent decision to request a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, it's anyone's guess as to what the future holds for the former champ.

Kyrie Irving isn't afraid to go against the status quo. Time and time again Irving has shown that he makes his own decisions. When news surfaced last March that Irving had parted ways with ROC Nation and was no longer being represented by the company, many wondered what was next.

He shocked everyone by announcing his step-mom, Shetellia Riley Irving, as his new manager. It was a pretty groundbreaking announcement given that she became the first black female agent in the league. Of course, she brings with her an impressive resume, which included serving as the Senior VP of Ad Sales for BET.

She spoke in an interview with Sports Illustrated shortly after the news dropped, saying:

“I think the only or the biggest weight on my shoulders was the fact that there were so many other people watching to see how well I did this. Because if I do this, right, it opens the door for so many other Black women. And we get a chance to have more than a seat at the table.”
“BET really gave me a compass for understanding the art of negotiation and really being prideful. We also learned to be a voice for those who don’t have a voice.”

Shetellia Riley Irving's role ahead of the upcoming trade deadline

With Kyrie Irving's decision to request a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, Shetellia Riley Irving's job just got that much more difficult. After a season that has seen him draw considerable criticism, while also performing like an All-Star, team's don't seem to know what to think about Irving.

Some analysts like Stephen A. Smith believe that he's worth $50 million a year thanks to his abilities on the court. On the other hand, some believe that Irving's knack for stirring up controversy off the court, however, makes him somewhat of a liability.

In fact, according to reports, Irving's activity, or lack thereof, seems to be a big talking point during his negotiations with the team. According to reports, the Brooklyn Nets wanted stipulations in Irving's contract, something he felt a player of his caliber shouldn't have.

According to Shams Charania:

"Nets offered Kyrie Irving a contract extension that had some stipulations in it... his side was vehemently against any stipulations in an extension. He believes that he deserved a fully guaranteed contract."

Kendrick Perkins also weighed in on the situation during a recent episode of NBA today, saying:

"This is Kyrie Irving: A guy that you cannot trust... This is supposed to be MJ day, and we're here dealing with Kyrie Irving again."
