The problems do not seem to end for the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF), as India’s Sports Ministry has derecognized the organization for not complying with its directives and those given by the International Boxing Association (AIBA). This decision comes as a massive blow for IABF as the federation was already debarred by the AIBA.

After taking this major step, the Sports Ministry stated:

“The matter has been considered in totality and keeping in view all relevant facts including the fact that the International Federation of the boxing sport has withdrawn its recognition to IABF, it has been decided to withdraw the recognition granted by Government of India to IABF with immediate effect.”

The IABF was temporarily suspended by the Sports Ministry in December 2012. The Ministry had ordered the IABF to hold fresh elections and make its constitution compliant with the National Sports Code.

The Sports Ministry was quoted as saying by DNA India, “The International Federation for the sport of boxing, i.e., AIBA has also from time to time advised the IABF to hold their elections after suitably amending the Constitution of IABF. However, neither the directions of the Ministry nor those of the AIBA have so far been complied with by IABF and fresh elections have not been held.

The Ministry further added that in respect of Olympic sports, recognition to any National Sports Federation depends on the existing legal status of the organisation as well as the status of its recognition by the International Federation, the Asian Federation and the International Olympic Association (IOA).
