World Chess Championship Anand- Topalov: Game 11 ends in stalemate as the scores remain level

Another piece down! The tournament is inching towards its dramatic finale.

In the Game 11 of World Chess Championship being played at Sofia between Vishwanathan Anand and Vesselin Topalov, both players agreed on a draw after the 65th move. Playing with white pieces, this was Anand’s last opportunity to make use of the slight advantage. He will play with the black pieces in the last of the 12 scheduled games.

Earlier, Topalov had come from behind to level scores against Anand in Game 8. After which the two have played a string of draws. This string of draws must end in the next game otherwise the title will be decided on May 13th in a tie break. The tie break games will be played in rapid chess format.

In Game 11, Anand started with the English move that had not been employed in the tournament before. Vesselin Topalov, it seemed, had a defense ready and broke Anand’s swift moves with ease. But ambitious Anand was stubborn and wanted to make a match out of it. He employed risky moves to tempt Topalov into an error by exchanging pieces quickly. Topalov, however, was determined to keep his defense intact and drew the match.

Anand’s last ditch efforts in the game were an indication of the fact that how critical this game was for him. Now, into the last game the pressure will be on the defending Champion as he will try and evade the aggressive play of Topalov. Topalov will be confident and rubbing his hands on the prospect of snatching away Anand’s crown in this last game with the advantage of white pieces.
