First win for the Chepauk Super Gillies

Chepauk Super Gillies registered their first win in the Tami Nadu Premier League by beating Karaikudi Kaalai by 67 runs at the NPR college ground in Natham, Dindigul. It was a complete team performance from the team from Chennai.

After choosing to bat first, Gillies were off to a great start as their opener KH Gopinath took charge and laid a good foundation for the batsmen coming in to finish with a flourish. He was backed well by Thala Sargunam (16 off 13) and Vasanth Saravanan (16 off 12) in the first six overs.

Gopinath continued his fine form and scored 4 fours and 3 sixes in his 26-ball 43. The team management got the batting line up right after their batting fiasco in the first match in which V Yo Mahesh opened the batting alongside Gopinath.

Once again, Mahesh looked rusty with the bat and his nightmare ended when he holed out to Sonu Yadav at long-on off Rajkumar’s bowling. Soon after, M Shahjahan dismissed Gopinath and that left Gillies in a spot of bother.

Skipper R Sathish and U Sasidev did the repair works and got the innings back on track. Sathish was going after the bowlers and Sasi kept the scorecard ticking from the other end. Both of them put on a 50 run partnership off just 27 balls before Sasi was dismissed by Sonu Yadav for a 17-ball 19.

Two overs later, Satish was bowled by Sonu Yadav for 46 off 22 balls (3 fours and 3 sixes) when he went for a paddle sweep. When things looked easy for the Gillies to become the first team to reach 200 in TNPL, but Sonu Yadav gave away just 5 runs in the last over of the innings and picked two wickets apart from a run out off the last ball of his over.

Gillies ended their innings with a score of 195 for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Sonu Yadav was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 4 wickets conceding just 27 runs in his 4 overs. If not for the 7 wides he bowled in his spell, his figures would have looked much better.

Chasing 196 to win, Kaalai were off to a great start in spite of losing Aniruddha Srikanth early on in their innings. Vijay Kumar took the attack to the opposition as he clobbered 5 sixes and 3 fours in his innings of 46 off just 20 balls before he was dismissed by RK Alexander.

His wicket signaled the end for the Kaalai as they lost wickets at regular intervals and the wicket of Rajhamani Srinivasan was the final nail in the coffin. Srinivasan scored 38 off 34 balls and apart from these two batsmen, none of the Kaalai batters reached the double figures as they were bundled out for just 128 in 17.1 overs.

W Antony Dhas picked up 4 wickets for just 9 runs in his 3 overs while Alexander scalped 3 wickets for 28 runs in his four overs. Dhas was adjudged the Man of the Match for his spell of 4-9 and an unbeaten 18 off 10 balls towards the Gillies’ innings.

Brief scores: Chepauk Super Gillies 195-9 in 20 overs (R Sathish 46, KH Gopinath 43, Sonu Yadav 4-27) beat Karaikudi Kaalai 128 in 17.1 overs (Vijay Kumar 46, Srinivasan 38, W Antony Dhas 4-9) by 67 runs.
