IPL 2018: Five players for whom Delhi Daredevils might use the Right-to-Match card

In the 2018 IPL retention, Delhi Daredevils made a good decision, retaining their star all-rounder Chris Morris, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and India's limited-overs batsman Shreyas Iyer.

After retaining three players, the Delhi franchise can use only two Right-to-Match (RTM) cards. Out of those two, one can be used for an Indian player and the other one can be used for an overseas international.

With the auction set to take place on January 27 and 28, the team's think-tank will have their task cut out on deciding the players to retain.

Let us take a look at the players for whom Delhi might use their RTM card.

Mohammed Shami

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was bought by Delhi Daredevils in the 2014 IPL auction and has been in and out of the side since then. In the four seasons, the Bengal pacer featured in just 28 out of the 56 matches the Daredevils played, thanks to injuries and the team's rotation policy.

Shami, who is one of India's best death bowlers, has delivered for the national team whenever he played limited-overs cricket but has failed to replicate his success in the T20 extravaganza. If the Daredevils are looking for a fast bowler to spearhead the pace attack along with Chris Morris, they don't need to look beyond the Indian pacer.

Amit Mishra

Delhi Daredevils have retained a batsman, a wicketkeeper-bat and a fast bowling all-rounder ahead of the 2018 IPL auction. They would look to retain the core of the team and one name that has been an integral part of the Delhi outfit over the years is leg-spinner Amit Mishra.

Mishra, who last played for India in January 2017, has taken 134 wickets in the IPL, which is the most by a spinner in the tournament. He has been Delhi's go to bowler over the last few years and the team management should trust their old warhorse and look to retain him in the auction.

With wrist spinners ruling T20 cricket around the world, it will be a bad decision to let Mishra go so easily.

Kagiso Rabada

Delhi have already retained thee players capable of contributing with the bat. They would like to use one of their RTMs on a player who can spearhead their bowling department and there is no need to look beyond South African pacer Kagiso Rabada.

Rabada has been the Proteas' best pacer over the last couple of years as the right-arm pacer has dominated the batsmen around the world with his raw pace and accuracy. Daredevils signed the 22-year-old in last year's auction and the pacer played in a few games before leaving to join South Africa for their ODI series against England.

If the team management are looking for a fast bowler to spearhead their bowling attack, then Kagiso Rabada is the best option for them.

Sanju Samson

Ever since making his IPL debut in 2013 for Rajasthan Royals, Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson has been one of the most consistent performers. He was one of two players to have been retained by the franchise in the 2014 auction, before he moved to Delhi when the Royals were banned for two years.

He continued his good work for the Daredevils, scoring 677 runs in the last two seasons as one of Delhi's mainstays in the batting department. The Delhi team management would like to retain the 23-year-old for his past contributions but the only thing that will stop them from doing so will be the lone RTM card they have in their hand.

Quinton de Kock

Ever since making his international debut, one man who has been scoring runs on a consistent basis has been South African batsman Quinton de Kock. Thanks to his consistent show in international cricket, he was bought by Delhi Daredevils in 2013.

Though he didn't get enough chances to play, he made use of the few opportunities and scored 726 runs in 26 matches at an average of 30 and a strike-rate of 133. Daredevils can use one of their RTMs on an overseas player since they have already retained Chris Morris and it won't be a surprise if they decide to use it for Morris' Proteas teammate de Kock in the auction.
