The IPL has had its fair share of controversies in the past and the authorities concerned are always on the lookout now to avoid a repetition of any such untoward incidents.
The police have revealed that six persons have been arrested from the Sambal region of Uttar Pradesh for their alleged involvement in betting in IPL matches. The names of the six accused arrested yesterday by the police during an IPL match are Ravi Kumar, Govinda, Pradeep Kumar, Arun Kumar, Vikram and Monu Raghav.
The police said that a case has been registered against them and the matter is being investigated. A TV set, four mobile phones and Rs 2000 in cash were also seized from the spot by the police.
This is not the first time that betting has cast its dark shadow on the IPL. The Lodha Committee had earlier suspended CSK official and the son-in-law of Srinivasan, Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, part-owner of the RR for taking part in illegal betting activities.
The judgement had pointed out that since Meiyappan had lost Rs. 60 lakh in betting, it can be established that he was involved in heavy betting activities. On Kundra, the committee said, "If he was truly in love with the game, he would not have engaged in betting."
The Lodha Committee judgement had also said that the betting activities of Meiyappan and Kundra have brought profound disrepute to the IPL, the BCCI and the game of cricket in general. CSK and RR were suspended for a couple of years following the verdict and the players from those two franchises are now playing for other teams.
With the image of the IPL being partially tarnished by the furore, it is only expected that strict action will now be taken against anybody participating in illegal betting activities.
