Irani Cup: Rayudu century puts Rest of India in command

Mumbai - A fine unbeaten century by Ambati Rayudu helped Rest of India gain command over Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai after the fourth day’s play of the Irani Cup match at the Wankhede Stadium here on Sunday.

Rayudu was batting on 118 and first innings centurion Suresh Raina on 40 as Rest of India ended the day at 296 for four in the second innings and stretched their lead to 413 runs. Mumbai were all out for 409 in the first innings.

With just a day left, Rest of India, who made 526 in the first innings, have now almost sealed this year’s trophy for the 25th time.

All eyes are now on Raina, who is looking determined to score another hundred. Another century in the match may prompt the selectors have a look at Raina for the Test series against Australia starting later this month.

Resuming the day at 271 for one, Rest of India were soon struggling at 67 for three. But it was the 140-run stand between Manoj Tiwary (69) and Rayudu that helped Rest of India claw back into the match.

Rayudu was in fine from and during his 217-ball unbeaten knock, he hit nine fours and four sixes.
