Rain halts Bangladesh's charge

Bangladesh ended up with 179 runs on board

Bangladesh were inching towards a rare first innings lead against World number 1 South Africa before rain halted their progress on day 2 of the first Test at Chittagong. Despite that, the major talking point of the day would be the shoulder-barging incident involving opener Tamim Iqbal and South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock which could result in both being sanctioned.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh began cautiously with a solid 46-run opening wicket partnership before Stiaan van Zyl stuck in his very first over removing Imrul Kayes for 26. Off-spinner Simon Harmer was introduced as early as in the 13th over and he responded with a wicket of his own as he removed Mominul Haque who has been very consistent recently.

But then Mahmudullah joined forces with Tamim and the duo put on an 88-run stand which frustrated the South Africans. Tamim was bowled while trying to sweep off part-timer Dean Elgar for a well compiled 57.

Minutes later, Veron Philander sent Mahmudullah back as the rain came down heavier halting play. Amusingly, it relented only for one delivery as the players had to rush back inside again forcing the umpires to close the day’s play.

Tomorrow is a huge day for both teams as Bangladesh trial only by 69 runs with two of their batting mainstays Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al-Hasan out in the middle. If they can put up a big partnership and help Bangladesh gain a lead of 100 runs in the 1st innings, we could then witness something special.
