Vettel says the new points rule is absurd

Red Bull’s World champion Sebastian Vettel has come out against the implementation of “double points” system for the final race.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Vettel compared Formula 1 with football saying:

“Imagine that on the last match of the Bundesliga season matches are worth double the usual points,”.

“It’s absurd and it punishes the drivers who worked hard through the whole season. I value the old traditions in Formula One and do not understand this rule.”

The new rule which was announced by the FIA following a meeting with the F1 strategy group has been receiving criticisms all round by fans.

Of the six teams that form the F1 strategy group, Red Bull had rejected the proposal while Ferrari and Mercedes have voted for the points system.

Red Bull’s motorsport consultant Helmut Marko said:

“At first it was planned to award double points for the last four races. But that would have made the previous races almost useless. “

He also said that the idea of specified start numbers would not work in F1. “This idea comes from the American NASCAR series,” said Marko, “but it works there because the driver careers there are much longer. In the F1, drivers fluctuation is much more and it would end up with drivers taking absurd numbers.”
