Alex Ferguson calls David Moyes' La Liga move 'a great opportunity'

David Moyes has said that he asked for advice from Sir Alex Ferguson before taking the La Liga leap, despite their last career reccomendation having failed to work out. Ferguson had replied calling the move “a great opportunity”.

“I was not given enough time to succeed or fail (at Manchester United). Nine months would never be enough time for any manager. Most real football people understood that there would be a period of transition at Manchester United when you take over from Sir Alex. I always believed I was the right person for the job and I still believe that is the case.”

“I think at the present time you could say it is the best league in the world. It’s overtaken the Premiership because of the quality of the players and the teams. La Liga has some of the finest players, some really good coaches and I wanted to test myself against the best.

Moyes also added that Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had called him to welcome him,“It’s great to see you back in football, David, and it’s great to see you in Spain.”

“Biggest challenge of my career”: David Moyes

David Moyes was unveiled as manager of Real Sociedad on Thursday, and he said that he was looking forward to facing up to the challenges he will have to come up against in charge of The White and Blues.

“I believe this is the biggest challenge of my career. I hope when the time comes for me to go back home I’ll be more ready, with more knowledge.”

Moyes will initially work with a backroom staff provided by his Spanish employers, but he is to make appointments of his own soon. He has insisted that there must not exist any Spanish-British division at the club.

“There is just one problem. The language.

I think a lot of my style comes with my body language and my conversation. It’s important it’s well translated. Let’s hope a Scottish boy can grasp it. But I’m already worried I’m speaking English in a Spanish accent.”

Everton similar to Real Sociedad

Moyes also talked of his desire to get “out on the grass” to coach the lads instead of focussing on backroom managerial decisions. The successful time he had as coach of Everton could be relevant at a club with the moderate ambitions of Real Sociedad.

Saying that his style was more like Jose Mourinho’s than Pep Guardiola’s, he said, “I am tough on players. I like to work hard and there is a lot of work ahead. I want to lead the team and I think I am capable of that.

I spent 11 great years at Everton and I took over a club similar to this, in a similar situation, and I think we got better and better. I don’t see any reasons why I can’t do that.”
