Arsenal's defence praised as both focused and intelligent

UEFA Champions League - Borussia Dortmund v Arsenal FC

Arsenal FC – A new-found unity at the back?

When it comes to Arsenal’s chances in the Champions League, it seems their strength is in their defence.

For a team that has come under fire from their own manager, their recent success has strengthened their position in the field and given hope to their legions of fans throughout the world.

Important win over Dortmund

It was the recent match against Borussia Dortmund that had all eyes on Arsenal and their tactics.

They secured an extremely important – vital, even – win over Borussia Dortmund by winning 1-0 in the Champions League Group F game.

Manager of Arsenal Arsene Wenger has since praised the team’s defence after criticising them for their naivety last time they played Dortmund a month or so ago. This time he said: “We had a united, focused performance, especially defensively. It was a question of being focused and intelligent, and to wait for the moment to create openings in their defence.”

A tough game for a tough team

Arsenal’s resilience and team work is just part of their strength as a team and are just some of the reasons that their fans are so loyal. Betting on Arsenal’s chances is very common with fans either choosing a mobile casino online to check their odds or going to a brick and mortar sports betting establishment. Whichever way they choose to back their team, it’s clear that their loyalty is rewarded by the team’s performance.

A tough match against Dortmund

Aaron Ramsey managed to score the goal that ended up being the winner in the 62nd minute. Winning against Dortmund not scoring looked pretty unlikely as the team had only not managed to score in one of the 60 games they previously played at home.

The reason for Dortmund’s lack of scoring genius during this match is definitely down to Arsenal’s tight defence.

Wenger added: “We had a difficult period at start of second half, but after we scored I felt we could have scored a second goal and we were less under pressure. Overall it’s a huge win here. If you look at the results they have made at home in the Champions League, not many teams have achieved that.”

Champions League success?

Although Arsenal are now leading Group F, whether they will make it to the knockout stages is definitely not certain. As the group has a lot of major European heavyweights in it, one of them will not make it and have to make do with a place in the Europa League.

It may not be Marseille, but it is definitely going to be either Napoli, Dortmund or Arsenal, so fans will be holding their breath to see what happens next. As Wenger said: “One of the big teams will have to pay a heavy price. I hope it will not be us.”
