Cristiano Ronaldo among the nominees for the Golden Foot award

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as one of the ten contenders of the 2013 Golden Foot award. The award aims to recognise the best player in the world over the age of 28.

The Portuguese player, if he wins, would be the first player from his country and second from his club to claim the prize. Incidentally, the first player from Real Madrid to win the award was also named Ronaldo.

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid Goal Keeper) and Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta have also been nominated.

A player can only win the prize once, and it has been presented at Monaco since its beginning in 2003. Currently, AC Milan and Juventus have the most players who have won the trophy (2).

Roberto Carlos(2008) , Ronaldinho(2009), Ryan Giggs (2011) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2012) are other players who have been awarded in the past.

The 2013 trophy will be given out by Prince Albert II of Monaco in September, with the winner leaving a permanent mould of their footprints in the “Champion’s Promenade”.

The nominees were chosen by a panel of representatives and a public vote then taking place online.

The nominees are: Samuel Eto’o (Anzhi Makhachkala), Andrea Pirlo (Juventus), Didier Drogba (Galatasaray), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Miroslav Klose (Lazio), David Trezeguet (River Plate), David Beckham (Paris Saint-Germain prior to retirement), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Iker Casillas (Real Madrid) and Andres Iniesta (Barcelona).
