Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has revealed that playing alongside captain Steven Gerrard is an inspiration as the Reds look to secure a maiden Premier League title, report the club’s official website. While the ex-Chelsea man also argued that the Liverpool skipper should go down as one of the best ever midfielders.

Brendan Rodgers’ side moved into pole position with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, with expectation growing that the 24 year wait for a league title on Merseyside could be about to end.

However, the side do not boast many players in their ranks that have gone through the pressures of a title winning campaign but Sturridge is adamant Gerrard is an outstanding role model regardless of the gap in his trophy cabinet.

“He’s just unbelievable every day, a great leader. He’s been here his whole career and it’s just a great pleasure to be able to play with him.

“He is the perfect example for every young player around the country – in fact a real example for every player,” he declared.

The England skipper has been deployed in a deeper lying midfield role this season and former Chelsea man Sturridge rates his team mate as one of the very best to play the game.

“He’s been so loyal to Liverpool – he has been world class and still is world class. Stevie will always be a legend not just for Liverpool, but to England as well.

“He will definitely go down in history as one of the best midfielders in the game, never mind just this club,” Sturridge insisted.

Yaya Toure (17) is the only midfielder to score more goals than Steven Gerrard (11) in the Premier League this season.
