David Beckham admits he was 'nervous' when he invited Sir Alex Ferguson for UNICEF match

David Beckham will be reunited with Sir Alex Ferguson on Nov 14 since leaving United in 2003

Former Manchester United midfielder David Beckham has revealed that he was initially scared to invite his boss Sir Alex Ferguson for a friendly match at Old Trafford, Manchester Evening News reported. Beckham is glad to know the Scot has accepted his invitation.

The 40-year-old will be reunited with his former gaffer Ferguson for the first time since leaving United in 2003 for Spanish giants Real Madrid. Beckham is set to captain the Great Britain and Ireland XI under the Scot against Rest of the World team in UNICEF’s ‘Match for Children’ on November 14 – organized by the United legend himself.

Ahead of the match, Beckham has admitted that he was initially nervous about calling Ferguson out of the blue, but he was relieved to know Ferguson accepted his invitation and is will to take charge of the team from the dugout – marking his first return to the Theatre of Dreams since his retirement from managerial role in 2013.

“The conversation for the game wasn't actually a tough conversation.” he explained.

“Thinking 'I have to ring the manager to ask him' was more worrying than actually asking him to be involved in this. I knew how much of a supporter of the UNICEF organisation he is and how Manchester United have supported them over the years. I knew it wouldn't be a difficult thing for him to get involved in because he has been a great supporter over the years.”

I have fond memories of the day I joined Fergie at United: Beckham

The former England national team captain earned his recognition at Manchester under the guidance of Ferguson. Beckham became one of the best, if not the best, dead ball specialists in the game during his prime and he has nothing but fond memories of the day he joined the boss at the club.

“I was in one of the corporate boxes with the manager.” he said.

“We had a nice dinner then we went into his office. I remember having a blazer on with gold buttons and I'd been given a Man United tie at the time. It was actually my birthday, so we had a cake. There is a picture of me and the manager signing my papers.”

Beckham had named the players in the squad earlier this month and he has included the likes of former teammates Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville to reunite with him at Old Trafford. He also named several legendary players from other clubs – Jamie Carragher, David James, David Seaman, Michael Owen in his team.

The class of 92 will be up against Zidane’s star-studded team and will be managed by Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti. Fabio Cannavoro, Ronaldinho, Luis Figo, Patrick Viera, Cafu will all partner the French legend on the pitch.
