Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed that he had the chance to sign German midfielder Mesut Ozil in the summer transfer window.

Ozil eventually joined Arsenal for £42.4m and has since impressed on the field as Arsenal built a healthy five point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

“We weren’t close to buying him but something was mooted a little bit before that,” said Moyes.

“We didn’t need that position at the time. I didn’t even say it was an interest, it was put to us and it was just something at the time we didn’t need.

Moyes said that Ozil wasn’t a priority as he had players available to fill his position.

“We we had Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney and people of a similar ilk so it wasn’t quite what we required at that time. We were looking at different positions.”

Moyes also admitted that he almost signed Aaron Ramsey when he was still the Everton manager.

“Yeah, I was very close to signing Ramsey at Everton,” Moyes said. “I had him in my house and Arsenal beat me to it.”
