Hodgson faces a major challenge in Brazil

England have found themselvesin the toughest group of all in next years World Cup. Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica will all face off against Roy Hodgson’s side. In spite of the challenge there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The tough group will be the perfect way to silence all of England’s critics.

The Three Lions have lifted the World Cup just once way back in 1966 and have since had a roller coaster ride in football. The England squad have been the butt of many jokes and jibes and have been mocked by managers of other countries due to their lack of success on the world stage despite having one of the best domestic leagues in the world. The time has come to prove their credentials once again.

Many different managers have come and gone from the team but it looks like Roy Hodgson is here to stay. England have an abundance of fresh talent and are not the same squad that they were a decade ago. The striking department has been bolstered by Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Rickie Lambert who are having stellar seasons so far. Sturridge and Rooney just can’t stop scoring and Welbeck has an excellent record for his country.

Andros Townsend has been a real revelation this season and is getting better with every game. The 22-year-old scored on his England debut and is a menace for defenders down the flank. Townsend will surely be an asset to England. Phil Jones has been superb in midfield for Manchester United but should be played as a centre back for England along with team-mate Chris Smalling who has also improved his game.

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, who will most likely play in their last World Cup, can inspire England to kick on. The veteran midfielders and looked up to by the whole squad and their experience is valuable to their team-mates.

Leighton Baines has had an excellent season before being injured and will most likely displace Ashley Cole as the Three Lions’s first choice left-back. Jack Wilshere is the shining light of the team and all eyes will be on the Arsenal youngster in the tournament. Wilshere is perfectly capable of handling such big responsibilities and will come good for his country.

Italy and Uruguay are attacking teams but England can hold their own against their opposition. The Lions gave quite a fight to Italy in Euro 2012 but were unfortunate to lose on penalties. England are capable of playing on the defensive and can give their opponents a pretty tough time.

Wayne Rooney recently stated on Facebook : “If we want to be the best, we have to beat the best. Tough group but really looking forward to it! Roll on Brazil 2014!” I’m sure England will do just that next year.
