Euro 2012: Match Report - Ukraine vs Sweden

Ukraine 2-1 Sweden: (Ibrahimovic 52′, Shevchenko 55′ 62′)

Line Ups

Champ of the Match: Andriy Shevchenko

The legend of Shevchenko struck again! One of the finest moments in his career, and he made history. In the first half, Shevchenko missed a key chance for Ukraine, and was subject to some negative comments being made about him.

Shevchenko was sharper in the second half, and had to be when Ibrahimovic struck for Sweden. 3 minutes later, ‘Sheva’ was in the box, waiting for the cross, it came in, and lo and behold, Shevchenko has scored a brilliant goal with his trademark, incredible movement.

7 minutes later, Ukraine were pressing Sweden, and they had a corner. The ball was directed near post, Shevchenko ran towards it, and flicked it towards goal with his head, and scored!

The game ended 2-1, and Shevchenko was delighted for him and for his country that were extremely jubilant.

Chump of the Match: Andriy Yarmolenko

Severely underwhelmed tonight, not creative enough. Expected to perform tonight. But another youngster Konoplyanka was much better, he provided an assist for Andriy Shevchenko. Yarmolenko failed to make a big impression on the game.

And if you hadn’t seen the team-sheet, you wouldn’t have known Yarmolenko was playing. Disappointing from the man we expected to shine tonight.Referee: Cuneyt Cakir

Didn’t have much to do. Very quiet game. Made the decisions he had to, and wasn’t subject to anyone majorly criticising the referee. Correctly spotted Olsson diving in the penalty area towards the end of the match.

Tweets of the Match

@dantracey1983 – and who else… Shevchenko gets the equaliser for Ukraine, great header, never did that for Chelsea though, did he? It’s 1-1.

@Richhhhhhh – Shevchenko equalises. The 2 talismanic strikers both live up to their reputations in a short space of time. Ukraine 1-1.

@samuelj29060 – Shev with the goals, but Yevhen Konoplyanka best player of the pitch. 22-year old winger from Dnipro. Big talent, like Yarmolenko.

@samuelj29060 – The goal the nation craved. Shevchenko gets up above Mellberg to net his 47th goal for Ukraine. Excellent assist.

@CainTalksFooty (Me) – Sweden need Ljungberg! What to expect next for Ukraine and Sweden

Ukraine got an excellent win tonight. Shevchenko looked brilliant, but I struggle to see him doing that against France or England. Also, the team were tired towards the end, and were badly fatigued. Unlikely chance of qualifying.

As for Sweden, they shouldn’t have lost, ‘Ibra’ needs to keep firing if they are to progress. Also unlikely.Written by Cain O’BennettFollow me on Twitter @CainTalksFootyCheck out his wonderful site, Euro 2012 BloggerPlease like O-Posts on FacebookFollow the site on Twitter
