Rashford scored his first goal outside Manchester for United

Manchester United defeated West Ham 2-1 in the FA Cup quarter-final replay at Upton Park to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. The first leg of the quarter-final ended in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford which forced the replay.

Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini scored for United while Tomkins scored the only goal for West Ham.

Here’s how each player fared in the match.

West Ham United

Darren Randolph – 6.5/10

Randolph produced a couple of fine saves in the first half to deny Fellaini and Lingard but was unable to save the day for his team as he was beaten by a beautiful finish from Rashford. Also, he cannot be held accountable for Fellaini’s goal.

Michail Antonio – 6/10

Antonio gave the ball away deep into his own half to Martial, who squared the ball to Rashford for United’s goal. Although, he did make some menacing runs forward.

James Tomkins – 6/10

Tomkins was left baffled by some brilliant bit of work by young Rashford, who scored for United in the 54th minute. However, he scored the only goal for the Hammers in the 79th minute.

Angelo Ogbonna – 5.5/10

Ogbonna failed to contain the threat of Marcus Rashford and apart from a couple of regulation clearances, did not do much in the match as United ran out as winners from the Upton Park.

Aaron Cresswell – 5.5/10

Cresswell looked good going forward but fell defensively short on a number of occasions in the match.

Cheikhou Kouyate – 6/10

Kouyate had a glorious chance to level the score, but he was undone by a brilliant De Gea save. Moreover, he dink-headed the ball into back of the net after a ricochet from another De Gea’s save, but he was ruled offside.

Mark Noble – 6/10

Noble was his usual composed self in the midfield. However, he failed to make a decisive contribution in the match as the Hammers fell short of a qualification to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Enner Valencia – 5.5/10

Valencia had a glorious chance early on to open the scoring for Hammers but failed to capitalise. He was then substituted for Victor Moses after United scored their first goal.

Manuel Lanzini – 6.5/10

The Argentine’s performance was satisfactory as he made quite a few runs forward in order to unsettle the United defence. However, he skied a shot after Fosu-Mensah’s clearance from a corner fell to him and he was taken off for Emenike in the 74th minute.

Dimitri Payet – 6.5/10

Payet did not look his usual elegant self. He did make a couple of runs but was not able to make a decisive contribution which could have helped his team in a crucial FA Cup tie.

andy carroll
Carroll tried to get his team back in the match but it was already too late

Andy Carroll – 6.5/10

Carroll’s performance was nowhere near the one he produced a week ago against Arsenal. Although, his prowess in the air helped him when he headed a corner back into the bunch of players, from where Tomkins scored the only goal for West Ham.

Substitutes:

Victor Moses – 5/10

Moses was brought in for Enner Valencia in the 62nd minute but did not pose much of a threat to the United goal.

Emmanuel Emenike – 5/10

Emenike was brought in for Lanzini in the 74th minute.

Manchester United

david de gea
De Gea saved the day for United, again

David de Gea – 7.5/10

De Gea once again saved the day for United. Apart from a great save in the 78th minute of the match from an Antonio flick, the Spanish goalkeeper made two back-to-back saves in the 89th minute to take United through the line.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah – 7/10

Fosu-Mensah looked menacing from the start as he continuously overlapped Lingard on the right side of the field and drilled in a few crosses. His performance defensively was commendable as well, however, he looked clueless once he was shifted to the left side of the defence.

Chris Smalling – 6.5/10

Smalling did well to keep Andy Carroll out of the equation for the majority of the match but failed to check him when he headed the ball back among the bunch of players for Tomkins to score.

Daley Blind – 6/10

Blind did well to partner Smalling in the center of the defence. However, he played a lot of misplaced passes upfront.

Marcos Rojo – 6/10

Rojo, like Fosu Mensah looked threatening going up the field, however, he did misplace a couple of passes in the first half. He was taken off for Valencia in the 67th minute.

Marouane Fellaini – 6.5/10

Fellaini had a glorious chance to open the scoring for United, however, his shot was tipped above the bar by the Hammers goalkeeper. Although, it was an easy finish for him when he scored United’s second goal from close range.

Michael Carrick – 6.5/10

After a shaky start, the former West Ham player composed himself and held the midfield for United who were keeping a high-line.

Rashford and Martial were too hot to handle for the Hammers defence

Anthony Martial – 7/10

Martial was instrumental in both the goals for United. Firstly, he squared off Rashford for the first goal and then his shot got deflected towards Fellaini who finished from close range to finish the tie.

Ander Herrera – 6.5/10

Herrera had a mixed day, while he played a couple of good passes, he was not as influential as one would expect from him. The Spaniard was substituted for Schneiderlin after picking up a knock.

Jesse Lingard – 6.5/10

Lingard found himself through on goal after a delightful move but his shot was saved by Randolph. His performance in the second half was also satisfactory apart from a couple of defensive mistakes.

Marcus Rashford – 7.5/10

The 18-year-old scored his first goal outside Manchester for the Red Devils. He went past Tomkins and finished from an acute angle to beat Randolph for United’s first goal. He partnered well with Martial as well.

Substitutes:

Antonio Valencia – 5.5/10

Valencia was brought in for Marcos Rojo in the 68th minute and was fielded on the right side of the defence.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 5/10

Schneiderlin was brought on for Ander Herrera in the 76th minute of the match.

Wayne Rooney – N/A

Rooney came on for Rashford in the 90th minute of the match.
