Rivaldo and his son Rivaldinho combined to score all three goals as Mogi Mirim won their second match on the trot since the 43-year-old’s return to on-field action last week. The 1999 World Footballer of the Year scored from the penalty spot while his son scored either side of his dad’s goal to give the Brazilian second division club a 3-1 victory on the night against Macae.

The former Barcelona and AC Milan was in the news last week as he came out of retirement at the age of 43 years. This time though he hit the headlines after starring in the match along with his son.

Rivaldo is the President of the Sao Paulo-based club and had announced his retirement as a player in March last year bringing down curtains on an illustrious 24-year career. However, after seeing his team endure a rough start to the season which saw them fail to win any of their ten opening games, Rivaldo hinted at a possible return to the game last month.

That came true on July 7 when Rivaldo took to the field against Nauitco in the Serie B clash. His first game back out of retirement was a personal disappointment as his side came to life only after Rivaldo left the field after almost an hour. However, in the fifty odd minutes he featured against Macae, Rivaldo showed that he still has some of the magic of yesteryears left in him, as he played a part in all three goals.

Rivaldo played the pass that helped set up the cross for his son’s thrid-minute diving header that gave Mirim the lead. The 43-year-old doubled his team’s advantage in the 17th minute by cooly slotting home the penalty and was involved in Rivaldo Jr’s second goal as well just before the half-time interval.
