S.S. Lazio v Fenerbahce SK - UEFA Europa League Quarter Final

Fenerbahce SK banned from Europe

Turkish giants Fenerbahce SK have been banned from European competitions for the next two years by the UEFA.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) today rejected an appeal by Fenerbahce to reverse its match-fixing ban from European competition. CAS’ approval of the original sentence means that the Turkish club would have to serve out a two-year suspension.

In June, Fenerbahçe, along with rivals Be?ikta?, were suspended from European competitions by UEFA for the involvement of their officials in match fixing of Turkish football matches in the 2010-11 season.

CAS had issued a stay on the punishment pending the verdict, allowing Fenerbahce to play in the Champions League qualification round.

Fenerbahce were alleged of fixing matches in the Turkish Super Lig in 2010-11 season.

The club officials were handed prison sentences by an Istanbul court. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had decided to exempt the club, mentioning that even though there were efforts to manipulate some games, they had not been reflected on the pitch.

UEFA then opened its own investigation to eradicate the evil vestiges of fixing from the game.
