Ferenc Puskás statue unveiled

Legendary Hungarian striker, Ferenc Puskás, was remembered by his friends and colleagues at Puskás Öcsi Square in Obuda. Marking his 86th birthday, a statue was unveiled by his former team mates, György Szepesi and Ferenc Kovács.

The life-size statue of Ferenc Puskás was sculptured by Gyula Pauer and Dávid Tóth. This idea came to them after looking at a picture of Ferenc Puskás, where he was teaching and showing his skills to the children in Toros de Las Ventas square, Madrid. The statue was erected by the municipality and sponsored by businesses and locals of the town.

Ferenc Puskás, who has a total of 84 international goals under his belt, also made 324 in 372 appearances for Real Madrid CF. Adding to the count, Ferenc Puskás won seven Spanish titles and three European Champions Club Cups. Ferenc Puskás career was highlighted when he scored 4 times against Eintracht Frankfurt in a final, crushing them with a score line of 7-3.

“Ferenc Puskás was the world’s best ever – and that’s not just my opinion, many others feel the same,” said György Szepesi, honorary chairman of the Hungarian Football Federation. He also quoted “He was a simple, straightforward kind of person with a great sense of humor; he would make a joke out of all kinds of things. He also had great faith in his team’s abilities and did not feel that knowing about the opponent’s tactics was necessarily important.”
