Fernando Torres wants more speed in Spain’s play at the World Cup

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has claimed that he wants to see more speed in Spain’s play and that they may have to ditch their tiki-taka style of play if they are to rescue their World Cup campaign.

Spain lost 5-1 to the Netherlands last week as they started the defence of their World title in the worst possible fashion. Xabi Alonso gave Spain the lead from the penalty spot but Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben then took control to seize a vital three points and inflict a damaging defeat on Spain.

The Spanish have won the last three major international tournaments, winning Euro 2008 and 2012 either side of their World Cup triumph of 2010 over the Netherlands.

The Dutch certainly gained their revenge last week as Spain’s tepid passing could not break Louis van Gaal’s side down.

Torres came on in the second half in a bid to salvage something from the game but he could not change the flow of attack that the Dutch were showing.

He thinks that maybe it is time for a change in Spain’s style of play, despite its enormous success.

He said: “We have to win however it works. But I think we will have more chances to win if we play well.

“We will have to adapt to our opponents. Chile are a difficult team. We will have to defend and fight one against one.

“We must be able to make the right passes so we can score goals. Probably sometimes we will have to be faster, sometimes we will have to control the ball. But we will have to give our best. That’s the only way we can win.”
