Former Manchester United manager David Moyes revealed that he tried all he could to sign Gareth Bale and also defended the Welshman’s irregular form this season. The winger has been under a lot of pressure from the fans and the media for his form this season and was at one point booed by the Madrid supporters.

Moyes who took up the rein at Real Sociedad after his short stint at Old Trafford says that he is a big fan of the Real Madrid star and was keen on signing him when he was in charge of Manchester United.

"Firstly, Gareth Bale is an outstanding player,” Moyes told Sky Sports in an interview. “I was desperate to take him to Manchester United from Tottenham, but couldn’t quite get him. He had his heart set on going to Real Madrid."

“He was very much on my radar as soon as I went to United," Moyes added.

Ever since taking charge at Spanish club Sociedad, Moyes had done a good job of guiding the club to a respectable 12th place finish in the league. Moyes took charge when the club was fighting to avoid relegation. The Scottish manager who has had the opportunity of watching Bale more closely in Spain says that Bale is set to become a big star.

"He can score goals, can make goals, he’s got speed, he’s physically capable, and I think next year he will be a big star in Madrid."

Needs time to settle in fully

Bale himself admitted that the season was not up to the expected standards. As Real Madrid finished without a major trophy, Carlo Ancelotti was sacked and Rafael Benitez took his place.

The 25-year-old said that he will come back stronger for next season and Moyes believes that it is only a matter of time before Bale integrates himself to life in Spain and plays at his best.

“It is down to settling in,” the Scotsman said. “David de Gea took time to settle at Manchester United, it is not easy.

“We have to give him time, Bale is no different to anyone else. As a British player playing abroad, you have to get involved, immerse yourself in the culture. You have to get used to the living times, the eating habits.”

“He is at a great club that will give him opportunity to succeed and I think he will.”
