Jamie Carragher slams Liverpool for lack of balance in the squad

Liverpool are yet to earn their first victory under Jurgen Klopp

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has slammed the club’s lack of aggression on the field and admitted the current squad is full of ‘average players’, as per the reports on Mirror. Club manager Jurgen Klopp secured a third straight draw against Southampton on Sunday with a 1-1 scoreline at Anfield.

The arrival of former Borussia Dortmund manager to Merseyside has definitely reignited the optimism in and around the red parts of Merseyside. However, the Reds are yet to register their first victory under their new German manager and they were left frustrated at the weekend against Ronald Koeman’s men when they cancelled Benteke’s opener through Sadio Mane, who ended up earning the valuable point for the away team.

Liverpool struggled to create clear cut chances on goal and the stats proved that they managed just two shots on target in the entire game. The club’s recent lacklustre performances have drawn a lot of attention and Carragher, who’s now a TV pundit, has criticised his former club for the lack of balance in the squad and has highlighted the side’s ‘slow football’.

“There is not enough being created.” Carragher said.

“The football has not been quick and fast, it's been slow and predictable, they are not creating chances. There are no wide players in the squad, there is an abundance of No 10s. I don't know how the transfer committee thought they would fit them in. That is Jurgen Klopp’s problem now. There are some problems with that squad in terms of the quality and the balance.”

Souness doubts Klopp will get the players he wants in the next transfer window

Graeme Souness, who’s Carragher’s colleague at Sky, agreed with the ex-England international and he is of the opinion that the German coach has a difficult task of turning the club’s fortunes around. Souness also doubts Klopp will acquire the services of the players he requires for his game style during the winter transfer window.

“The biggest problem is this is the group he's got.” he said.

“At Liverpool he will be given the time to get it right but it's not a quick fix. He'll know their limitations, the players are too samey. They all come towards the ball. It's a difficult job he's got on his hands.

“Will he get the players he wants at Christmas? I very much doubt it. Between now and Christmas it's about assessing what he (Klopp) has and hasn't got. The players that have arrived in recent history are not going to get too much in resale value so the owners have to put their hands in their pockets again.”
