Lionel Messi's shot hits supporter in the stands during Barcelona-Villarreal game

Messi could not help Barcelona to a win yesterday

Lionel Messi was not at his best during yesterday's game against Villarreal. The Argentine failed to inspire his team to a victory as the Catalans were held to a 2-2 draw. Messi took several shots during the game, many of them wayward and off target.

One of his piledrivers in the first half hit an unfortunate Villarreal fan in the stands. The little man took aim and lashed a powerful shot from outside the box on the right-hand side and the ball sailed high and wide over the bar into the stands.

A woman sitting in one of the front rows was unfortunately on the receiving end of that effort and immediately felt the effects of the shot. The woman first reacted in pain as she covered her jaw in angst.

She then slowly started to lose consciousness as she leaned over on her friend's shoulder for support.. Then she made her way out of the stadium looking dazed and upset from the incident as the medics helped he walk out.

The fans around her were slightly amused by all of it but the victim definitely wasn’t. After that shot, it looked like Messi raised a hand in apology but it isn’t clear if it was towards his teammates or the fan. It is also not clear whether the fan returned to the game or not after her unfortunate afternoon.

Barcelona remain nine points clear at the top after the draw, with Atletico Madrid losing against relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon on Saturday. Real Madrid closed the gap on their neighbors with a 4-0 win over Sevilla last night but still remain 10 points behind the Catalans.

Here’s how the events unfolded:

Messi: This is going to curl into the top corner!

Supporter: OUCH!! That hurt!

Messi: Oops! Okay, maybe not the top corner! Sorry about that!

Supporter: I'm feeling dizzy....!

Supporter: I better get out of here before Messi targets me again!

Messi: Oh no! I hope she’s not seriously hurt!
