Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has claimed the club will continue to spend and improve the squad in order to maintain their superb form.

The Reds are second in the Premier League, four points behind Chelsea, after beating Southampton at the weekend and Ayre is confident of securing top signings in the summer.

Liverpool spent £17 million on summer transfer deadline day in 2013 to bring Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain while also spending £14m on Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas.

However, Ayre failed to bring anyone in for Brendan Rodgers in January, during which the Reds narrowly missed out on Ukrainian talent, Yevhen Konoplyanka, and the ‘Egyptian Messi’, Mohamed Salah.

Ayre said: “We’ll continue to add to the team and support him in putting additional players into the group.

“The Liverpool fans who have been through these last few years with us are not just part of it – they are a big part of it and the reason to do it, to be honest.

“Our fans are a huge, huge part of our achievements and if you ask any player or any manager at any club, they’ll tell you the reason they do it is for the fans.

“I really believe that. We are blessed in that we have the best fans – and so many of them. Their support, as always, has been unquestionable.”
