Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is staying calm despite the team’s growing defensive frailties.

The Reds conceded three more goals on Saturday to take their total up to 35 for the season with 11 games still to be played as they strive to win their first league title in 24 years.

Liverpool are six points clear of Tottenham and hold their place solidly just inside the top four and are four points off top spot, giving them hope of a victorious run-in.

That starts with Southampton at the weekend but Mignolet is not concerned by their defensive lapses that have seen the Reds keep just seven clean sheets in their opening 27 matches.

“We are in a good position at the moment but with 11 games to go there are still a lot of things that can happen,” he told the Liverpool ECHO.

“We need to stay calm and just focus on our next game at Southampton. We won’t be thinking about what’s happened against them in the past (losing their last three visits).

“The gaffer gives everyone confidence. When you step on to the pitch you know that he’s behind you and supporting you.

“Everyone is trying to do their job the best they can and we need to keep doing that until the end of the season.”

Kolo Toure has come under increased pressure in recent weeks after two clear errors leading to goals; one, a poor pass to Victor Anichebe who equalised for West Brom and two, an own goal at Fulham.

However, the Ivorian is staying calm, just like Mignolet.

“We just need now to keep calm and do what we have been doing, if we continue that we will get the same results,” Toure told City Talk 105.9.

“There are going to be some tough games.

“Southampton is a tough place to go but I think we can score goals and defend well as a team and we are working hard.”

Liverpool are one of seven teams yet to receive a red card in the Premier League.
