Rumour: Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal confident of making Thomas Muller his first signing

Manchester United manager – and current Netherlands boss – Louis van Gaal is said to be in constant dialogue with his new employers over their summer transfer activity, with The Daily Mirror reporting that he is confident of making Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller one of his first signings.

Muller has struggled to nail down a regular run in the Bayern side in one set position under Pep Guardiola, prompting speculation linking him with a move to United that would see him reunited with former Bayern boss Louis van Gaal.

The 24 year old German broke into the Bayern side under van Gaal’s management, but played just 15 full games in the Bundesliga last season. He scored 13 goals in his 31 appearances, but has now been linked with a move away.

That van Gaal is working on his transfer targets will come as little surprise to United fans, but will be providing the Dutchman with time management issues as he juggles his new role with the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign.

Any move for Muller was given encouragement this week with hints at discontent at his role at Bayern.

He told German media, “I have now come to the point where I insist to know that I am part of the starting 11 at Bayern Munich. I have also demanded to know if the club really want to go forward with me in the next few seasons.

“I am no longer the type who says, ‘OK then, today I will play in this role, next match in that role. Just move me about and I will keep my mouth shut’. No, those days are gone.’’Muller had a conversion rate of 22% last season
