Mexicans celebrate World Cup victory over Croatia at Angel of Independence

Thousands of Mexicans spilled on to the streets of Mexico city on Monday after Mexico qualified to the round of 16 of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

El Tri, as they are fondly called, struggled to even make it the World Cup with a disastrous qualifying campaign. They just scraped through to the World Cup finals with a win in the play-offs against lowly New Zealand and now they have a booked a date to face the hosts Brazil in the last-16 stage of the World Cup.

Miguel Herrera’s side negotiated their passage through group A with win over Cameroon and a draw against Brazil. Mexico won their final group game against Croatia in a must-win game for both the teams with a 3-1 scorelin;, their talisman Javier Hernandez featuring in the score sheet after a long drought.

After watching their team record a memorable win, hordes of Mexican supporters descended to the Angel of Independence in downtown Mexico city. The Angel of Independence is a famous memorial, built in 1910 to commemorate the centennial of the beginning of Mexico’s ‘War of Independence’. It is the focal point of any celebration or protest in the city and the Mexicans had a good reason to celebrate yesterday.
