What’s the story?

Jose Mourinho says he is open to a return to Real Madrid, insisting he would have no problem managing Los Blancos again.

In case you didn’t know…

Mourinho managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 in what was a mixed three years at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Portuguese led the Blancos to LaLiga title, as well as the Copa del Rey in his time in charge of the club.

Mourinho’s Real Madrid also became the first club in the Spanish top flight to finish with 100 points in the league standings. However, the 56-year-old parted ways with the Spanish giants after falling out with a number of his players.

The likes of Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe were all not on good terms with the Portuguese manager, who eventually left the club in 2013. Both Mourinho and Real Madrid have since moved on, with the Portuguese going on to win trophies with Chelsea and Manchester United, before being sacked by both clubs.

Madrid, on the other hand, have gone on to win four Champions League titles in the last five years, but have been struggling this season following the departures of Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane.

The heart of the matter

Real Madrid’s recent struggles have led to speculations linking Mourinho to a return to the Bernabeu. Indeed, the Portuguese himself has revealed that he is open to rejoining the Blancos.

He told beIN SPORTS, as quoted by Goal:

"To a club that I have been before? If I think the right club, the right structure, the right ambitions, I will have no problem at all.
"I think it's really a reason of pride when a club where you worked before wanting you back. They [Madrid] are the iconic club, I think so, you know, [they have won] 13 Champions Leagues [titles]."

What’s next?

Mourinho is currently without a club and has already indicated that he would love to soon return to management. Therefore, if Santiago Solari is not able to overturn Madrid’s falling fortunes, then it will only be logical for the club to consider re-hiring the Portuguese in the summer.
