Reports: Chelsea set to match Real Madrid offer for Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos

Chelsea have reportedly made a shock late bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos, and the club are prepared to match Real Madrid’s offer for the Germany international, reports the Metro.

Real Madrid have made a £19.9 million offer for the 24-year-old playmaker, which Bayern are believed to have accepted. Last season’s Champions League winners expected to complete the deal after Kroos returned from the World Cup in Brazil, though Chelsea could now hijack their bid.

Chelsea have already told Kroos he will get a contract worth £125,000-a-week, and they are also prepared to offer a substantial signing on fee.

Kroos is one of the most highly-rated midfielders in Europe, and played a key role for Pep Guardiola at Bayern last season. Despite that, he only has one year remaining on his deal at the Allianz Arena, and Bayern risk losing him for nothing next summer.

He can play as a number ten or in a deeper-lying role, and he can control the tempo of a game with his impressive passing range, as well as offering a threat with his long-range shooting.

Kroos has played every minute of Germany’s World Cup campaign so far, and he is expected to be named in Joachim Low’s starting line-up again tonight in the quarter-final against France.
