Real Madrid are set to try and sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder and long-term Man United target William Carvalho.

Reports in Spain suggest that Real Madrid have admitted defeat in their pursuit of Chelsea’s Ramires and Juventus duo Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba.

Consequently they have turned their attention to Carvalho who gained a lot of attention for his performances for Sporting this season.

Manchester United have been extensively scouting Carvalho this season and despite being set to make a move it looks like they are about to be trumped by Madrid.

It is believed that Carvalho will be the replacement for Sami Khedira but he still has some work to fully convince Carlo Ancelotti that he is of the required standard.

Given that Khedira is set to be moved on at Madrid there is every chance that United could be prepared to try and sign him as compensation for missing out on Carvalho.

Carvalho is currently with the national squad in Brazil preparing for their next World Cup group game after losing their first match against Germany 4-0.
