Rooney: “RVP would be a great addition to United”

Arsenal v Norwich City - Premier League

LONDON, ENGLAND – MAY 05: Robin van Persie of Arsenal looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Arsenal and Norwich City at the Emirates Stadium on May 5, 2012 in London, England.

Wayne Rooney has had his say on the proposed move of Robin van Persie to Old Trafford, suggesting “He’d be a great addition to the squad.” The proposed move of Van Persie to United, reportedly his‘favoured’ destination, has recently stalled after Arsenal are proving reluctant to sell to us and are looking for an offer abroad where the sale may not strengthen one of their direct rivals.

Rooney said “He’s a player that I admire. He’s a fantastic player, he’s been amazing for Arsenal over many years. Last season was probably his best season of all, he scored a lot of goals. If he does come here he would be a great addition to the squad.” Rooney remains our most prolific goalscorer, and has also consistently beaten the Dutchman to the Golden Boot over previous years until Van Persie finished top last season.

With Van Persie wanting a move to United, there’s still hope that it might come off – but it all depends if we’re ready to pay their rather hefty 25 million asking price. With our precarious financial situation and the uncertainty behind the success of the IPO I can’t see us paying out that much money for a player who plays in a position we’ve got covered quite well. Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez remain our main three upfront, while it looks like Berbatov might stay too.

Ideally this could do with a bit of strengthening for European matches but 25 million would probably be spent more effectively on the holes in central midfield. Besides, Rooney has consistently scored more goals than Van Persie over previous seasons, with last season being the first where Van Persie won the Golden Boot and scored more than Rooney. The Dutch forward remains injury prone but, as shown by Ferguson’s recent quotes, we’re certainly keen and it’s a real possibility that he’ll end up at United.
