Serie A Team of Week - 1

Nineteen goals were scored in the inaugral gameweek which saw Inter and Napoli topping the scoring charts. Jovetic inspired a Viola to win Montella’s first league game as a Fiorentina manager while Juventus stretched their unbeaten run to 40 games in the league alone. Milan were stunned at home by Ciro Ferrara‘s Sampdoria and Catania held Roma to a 2-2 draw at the Olympico. Here’s a look at the team of the week.

Sergio Romero [Sampdoria] – Goalkeeper

The Argentinian goalkeeper was magnificent as the newly-promoted team from Genoa defeated the Rossoneri at the San Siro. The former AZ keeper made crucial saves off Boateng and Constant in the game and keeping out Yepes and Boateng at bay towards the end.

Daniele Gastaldello [Sampdoria] – Defender

The Italian defender ensured Sampdoria went away with all 3 points against Milan when he cleared off the line from Flamini, right at the end. Gastaldello, along with Rossini, put up a fantastic performance at the heart of the Sampdoria defence.

Luca Marrone [Juventus] – Defender

After a 3-month long injury to Lucio, Juventus put out a midfielder as a centre-back against Parma. Marrone partnered Bonucci and Barzagli effectively, ensuring that Juventus did not miss Chiellini or Lucio. He had a passing accuracy of 96% and was brilliant in the air as well. He made some important interceptions and was rarely caught out of position.

Jonathan Rossini [Sampdoria] – Defender

Rossini gelled with Gastaldello and kept the Rossoneri forwards at bay with utmost ease. The Swiss footballer was assertive in defence and hardly put a foot wrong in the match.

Stephan Lichtsteiner [Juventus]- Right Midfielder

Lichtsteiner was the first Juventus player to score in their Scudetto campaign of last year and the first player to score in the Juventus Sports Arena. He put up a stunning performance on the right flank and was the first player to score for Juventus in this year’s campaign as well. Co- incidentally, both of them came against Parma.

Marek Hamsik [Napoli] – Centre Midfielder

After being an important part of the “holy trinity” last season, Hamsik has been playing a deeper role at the centre of midfield in recent times. Hamsik was one of the standout players in the Serie-A this week after scoring a goal to cap off his assist.

Daniele De Rossi [A.S. Roma] – Centre Midfielder

De Rossi continued from where he left the Euro Championship in top form. He was brilliant defensively and his passing was exquisite, as usual. He inspired a Roma comeback when he provided for Osvaldo. The Roman, who stood by his club and chose loyalty over money, is building on the perfect example he has been setting in Italy.

Wesley Sneijder [ Inter] – Centre Midfielder

Wesley Sneijder was the only notable performer for the Netherlands national team in the Euro Championships and he capped off yet another stunning Serie-A opener. He opened the scoring for Inter and was involved in the second goal. Wesley Sneijder is back at his best.

Kwadwo Asamoah [Juventus]- Left Midfielder

Asamoah was the standout performer for the reigning Italian champions. Asamoah ran tirelessly on the left flank and bombarded the Parma left wing. He was absolutely amazing in his Serie-A league debut for the ” Black & White “. A brilliant assist and a potrayal of his versatility ensures Asamoah is the player to watch out for in the Juventus team.

Diego Milito [Inter] – Striker

Diego Milito scored one and set up two in Inter’s 3-0 win over Pescara. Milito, along with Cassano, threatened the Pescara defence repeatedly. It’s safe to conclude that Inter will be a deadly force with Milito thriving for them consistently.

Stevan Jovetic [ Fiorentina] – Striker

The striker from Montenegro scored a brace in Fiorentina’s comeback win over Udinese. The Viola marksman is proving exactly why he is wanted by most of the powerhouses across Europe. Jovetic’s second goal was an exquisite finish that capped off a brilliant win over Guidolin’s men.

Milan have left a lot to be desired and have shown that they will struggle if they don’t make some quality signings in the next few days. On the contrary, Udinese need to try and hold on to their squad, lest they slip up too.
