Video: Zaccheroni hopes to mastermind Japanese win over Italy

Japan’s Italian head coach Alberto Zaccheroni is looking to defeat his homeland when Japan face Italy in the Confederations Cup on Wednesday.

Japan already know they will be returning to Brazil to play in next year’s World Cup and they want to establish a winning habit in the South American country.

Japan play Italy in their second Confederations Cup match on Wednesday.

It will be an especially important match for Alberto Zaccheroni, who was born in Northern Italy.

And Zaccheroni is eager to defeat his compatriots.

Alberto Zaccheroni, Japan coach“When I prepare our match strategy I observe the characteristics of my adversaries but I prioritise the strengths of my squad. My team will not change their style. We will play our own game in our own style but there will be some surprises due to Italy’s strength.”

Italy won their opening match against Mexico so a victory will see them qualify for the semi-finals.

However head coach Cesare Prandelli is worried about his side’s fitness.

Cesare Prandelli, Italy coach“Training is very important for us to understand who is fit, who is ok and once we know the general condition of the squad, we will decide on the starting line-up. We gave a lot in our last match so changes may be necessary.”

The Italians have never lost to Japan.

2001 runners-up Italy must avoid defeat if they are to stand any chance of progressing.

Zaccheroni could provide the inside information to upset the odds.
