Wayne Rooney says he will be looking to enjoy this summers World Cup and has advised the younger troops in the camp to do the same.

Rooney is readying himself to play in his third World Cup for England, however, the first two did not go to plan and the Manchester United man will be looking to amend that.

Rooney was sent-off in the 2006 competition after stamping on Ricardo Carvalho during England’s quarter-final clash against Portugual.

Rooney has come under scrutiny for his role in the England team, with many believing he should not be a guaranteed starter against Italy in England’s World Cup opener against Italy on Saturday.

The Manchester United striker has failed to recreate his club form on the international stage for England in recent years and the home faithful are finally starting to take notice. The forward’s fitness has also come into question after missing a number of games at the back-end of the campaign for the Red Devils.

Rooney, who was backed by Jose Mourinho to shine in South America, admits he will look to enjoy the tournament and has also pleaded with the England youngsters to do likewise.

He told reporters: “If I had one piece of advice for the young players in the England squad,” he said, “it would be, ‘Enjoy it.’

“You have to enjoy the moment. Maybe I have not done that in the previous two World Cups but I am going to do it in this one. Maybe in the past, I’ve put myself under too much pressure. Maybe you guys, the media, have put me under a lot of pressure and I’ve tried to respond to that.

“This time I haven’t and I’m not going to. I’m going to enjoy it. I’m enjoying the preparations and I’m excited for this tournament.

“I’m enjoying working with the younger lads, the experienced lads. It’s the best squad of England players I have been involved in. We can do well. I have learned to enjoy this one because I haven’t enjoyed the previous two. They’ve not gone well.

“All of a sudden you’re looking back and they’ve gone and I didn’t enjoy it. This one I’m going to enjoy it regardless of what happens. I’m going to take positive memories home with me.”
