The 2023 edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup will begin on Friday, October 27. The event is an under-21 field hockey tournament and this year it will feature eight teams, split into two groups. The top two teams from either pool will progress to the semifinals. The eight-day event, which concludes on November 4, is set to take place in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
This is the 11th edition of the tournament, with the first Sultan of Johor Cup taking place in 2011. Malaysia won the trophy that year, with India finishing fourth.
India have had a successful run in the tournament's span since 2011, with the fourth-place finish kickstarting a promising future. They ended up runners-up in 2012, when they lost to Germany but had their best-ever tournament in 2013 when they won the trophy after walloping Malaysia 3-0 in the final.
They repeated the feat in 2014, when they defeated Great Britain for the trophy. Subsequent years saw India come close to lifting the trophy, with second-place finishes in 2015, 2018 and 2019. They returned to form in the last edition in 2022, when they lifted the trophy for the third time when they defeated Australia.
The 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and India are the current defending champions and favorites to lift the trophy for a record fourth time this year.
India and Great Britain have been the most dominant teams across all 10 editions, with both teams winning the tournament thrice. Australia have won twice, while Malaysia and Germany have lifted the trophy once each.
Other countries like Argentina, Pakistan and South Africa have showed their quality in portions but have never reached the end stages of the tournament.
This year will see defending champions India, hosts Malaysia, Great Britain, South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia and Germany battle it out for glory in Malaysia.
Sultan of Johor Cup 2023: Full schedule and timing in IST
The U-21 field hockey tournament will begin on October 27 with India taking on Pakistan in a blockbuster first match. Australia will face Great Britain in the second match, while Malaysia and New Zeland will clash in the final game of the day.
The teams are divided into two pools, with Pool A comprising of Australia, Great Britain, Germany and South Africa and Pool B consisting of India, Pakistan, Malaysia and New Zealand. The top two teams from either pools will play the semi-finals on November 3.
The winners will progress to the finals, which takes place on Saturday, November 4. The 5th-8th place matches will happen on November 2, and based on the results the 7th-8th place match will happen on November 3 and the 5th-6th place match will take place on November 4.
