VALENCIA, SPAIN – JUNE 24: F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone meets Brazilian footballer Roberto Carlos before the European Grand Prix at the Valencia Street Circuit on June 24, 2012 in Valencia, Spain.

The German banker who took monetary bribes from Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone during the sale of shares to CVC, Gerhard Gribkowsky, has been given an eight and a half year jail sentence. He was charged with bribery, breach of trust and tax evasion.

During the acquisition of Formula 1 in 2005, it came to the surface that Gribkowsky received a total of 44 million dollars from a bribed Ecclestone. The F1 CEO paid the money in order to prevent the former banker from contacting the British tax authorities and submitting a selection of allegations. The threats weren’t transpired as the money was transferred.

It is not clear yet if further investigations will take place into Ecclestone’s involvement in the situation. Earlier it was stated that the German authorities could press charges against Bernie.

“Mr. Gribkowsky was quite sophisticated in shaking me down,” Ecclestone explained. “I’ve got shaken down by a lot of people, but not as subtle as with Mr. Gribkowsky.”
