VIT University students participate in the Shell Eco Marathon Asia

2010 Design of VIT University's Eco Car

Eco Titans is an all student team from Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. It is trying to build a super mileage prototype whose technology aims at powering a greener future. Eco Titans will be participating in the Shell Eco Marathon, Asia which starts from 4th July, 2012 at the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia.

2010 Design of VIT University's Eco Car

The origin of the Shell Eco Marathon dates back to the 1930’s, when its Shell’s scientists and researchers challenged each other to take out maximum miles out of their car from a single gallon of fuel. What started as a research in a US laboratory, moved to France in the year 1986 as a competition between engineers and scientists. Today, the Shell Eco Marathon or SEM is organized in three continents – America, Europe and Asia. The test course is a motor racing track similar to the Circuit Paul Armagnac, France; Rockingham, UK or the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia. The competition itself can be divided into gasoline fueled, diesel fueled, solar fueled, HEBV (Hydrogen Electric Battery Vehicle) and EBV (Electric Battery Vehicle) based on the form of energy being used to propel vehicles. Furthermore, it can be divided into the Prototype and Urban Concept based on drivability and other miscellaneous properties of the model itself.

The La Swiss team, ETH Zurich, achieved a projected 3,836 km on a single litre of fuel. This is the equivalent to driving from Paris to Moscow!

The Asia leg was started in the year 2010. Thailand’s Kong Thabbok Upatham Changkol Kho So Tho Bo School attained over 1500 km/l, enough to cover the distance between Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, to emerge on the top. The participant teams have to adhere to the rules issued by Shell and any lapse on the part of the team leads to its disqualification. The teams have to clear two phases, which demands inspection of very minute detail of the car being built. It is only after a team clears PHASE-II when it is allowed to participate and is entertained on the circuit. It is then followed by an on-track technical inspection, which if a team fails, is disqualified from the dynamic event.

The present team of Eco Titans is sponsored by companies like Michelin, Bosch, AIA Engineering, Shell and VIT University. The team consists of second and third year engineering students from the department of automotive, energy and mechanical from VIT, who are guided by a faculty advisor. The students design, manufacture their concept and therefore realize how an engineering drawing comes alive in real time. Eco Titans will be participating second time, last being in 2010. The team’s design was adjudged to be third best overall. It was also among the two Indian teams who cleared the technical inspection. The 2012 team aspires to be the first Indian team to qualify for the dynamic event that is, actually drive the car on the Sepang International Circuit. This year, roughly 15 teams from our country have qualified for PHASE –II.
