What is Giants GM’s biggest regret on $160M Daniel Jones deal?

The New York Giants agreed to terms with quarterback Daniel Jones yesterday, minutes before the NFL franchise tag closed. The two sides agreed to terms on a massive four-year $160 million contract extension that included $35 million in upside.

The four-year starting quarterback for the Giants cashed in after the team elected not to pick up his fifth-year option for the 2023 season last April.

General manager Joe Schoen spoke to the media on Wednesday, March 8 about Jones' contract. Schoen was blunt when he said he wishes he could have made the fifth-year option a year ago.

"If I thought I would have been here a year ago, I would have done the fifth-year option."

As mentioned above, the team decided to pass on his fifth-year option last off-season.

They paid for it (literally) as Jones had the best season of his young career.

In a contract season, Jones went 9-8 while leading the Giants to the playoffs. He led them to a road victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the wildcard round of the playoffs.

Jones set a career-high in yards (3,205) completion percentage (67.2) completions (317) attempts (472) rushing yards (708) and rushing touchdowns (7.) He only threw for 15 touchdowns on the season.

The extension allowed the Giants to use the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley, who was set to become a free agent.

Barkley will earn $10.1 million this season and still has the chance to agree to a long-term deal with the team. Both Barkley and Jones will be back next season for the Giants.

Joe Schoen believes that Daniel Jones can win a Super Bowl for New York Giants

Schoen answered a bunch of questions regarding Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and the Giants' off-season plans.

Speaking to the media, the 43-year-old stated that Jones could lead the team to a Super Bowl victory.

"Yeah, yeah I do. That's the goal, that's everybody's goal to win the Super Bowl. So I think Daniel, when you look at he played well his rookie year, he played well for us this past year, I think the coaching staff has confidence in him and we're gonna continue to build the team around him."

It seems as if the Giants are all-in on Daniel Jones. The next thing they'd like to do is extend Barkley, but the team's focus is to build around their quarterback.
