Giants have difficult franchise tag call to make with Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants have some difficult tasks to take care of this offseason. Both their starting quarterback (Daniel Jones) and running back (Saquon Barkley) enter free agency.

The team is expected to keep both players, although it may be a difficult task to do. They currently have around $46 million of cap space but will need to use a good chunk of it on Barkley and Jones alone.

With both players vying for long-term deals, only one might get what they want, while the other will have to settle for the franchise tag.

However, it wouldn't be impossible for both to get a long-term deal. New York Giants NFL Nation reporter Jordan Raanan reported that Jones could get a contract of $35 million per year and Barkley could get a long-term deal of $14 million per year.

According to league and team sources, Barkley turned down a deal for more than $12 million per year during the team's 2022 bye week.

If the team can't secure a long-term deal with Jones, they are expected to use the franchise tag on him, which will account for $32.4 million next season.

The two led the team to their first playoff berth together this past season as they recorded a 9-7-1 season. They earned themselves an upset victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the wildcard round but fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round.

Jones threw for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions, and posted a career-high 92.5 quarterback rating in 2022-23.

Barkley bounced back from a down 2021 season and was a candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. He recorded a career-high 1,312 rushing yards along with 10 rushing touchdowns.

Both of their career seasons may have earned each of them a contract extension with the team.
