Rio Olympics 2016 India, Shooting: Heena Sidhu, Women’s 10m air pistol preview, date, timing and where to watch

It will be Heena Sidhu’s chance to bag a medal in her second appearance at the Games

Women’s 10 metres air pistol is one of the three shooting events that will be conducted on the third day of the Olympic Games. This event is similar to the men’s 10m air pistol which took place yesterday where Vietnam’s Xuan Vinh Hoang won the gold medal.

In this event, a shooter is stationed 10 metres away from a target whose centre is located at a height of 1.4 metres above the ground. The women shooters are given a total of 40 shots in their 50 minutes in the qualification round. The maximum a female shooter can score during this stage is 400 points.

The top eight women shooters advance to the final round where they start the round with zero points. These shooters will have to shoot 20 shots to get to the podium. Here is everything you need to know about the event:

Heena Sidhu: The Indian is currently ranked 27th in the world and will be looking to create history when she participates in her 2nd Olympic Games later today. The 27-year old shooter is poised to make history for her nation.

Heena Sidhu’s consecutive gold medal wins at the 2014 Kuwait City and 2015 New Delhi Asian Championships has instilled huge confidence in the her. Her performances in 2016 have been smooth, and with the right amount of training before the Games, she will be expected to pose a challenge to the star shooters of this event.

Shooters to watch out for:

Olena Kostevych (Ukraine): Olena Kostevych is a pistol shooter from Ukraine who specialises in the 10m air pistol event. The shooter has some big accolades to her name. She won the gold medal in the same event at the 2004 Athens Olympics and also won a bronze medal at the London Olympics.

However, The 31-year old will be looking to create history when she competes in Rio by bagging her second gold in the same event. She is currently ranked number one in the world.

Guo Wenjun (China): The 32-year old Chinese shooter has been a two-time Olympic gold medallist. She will be gunning for a hat-trick of gold medals in this event after having won in Beijing and London. However, her form has not been that great this season. But Chinese supporters will be hoping the shooter has rectified her errors, giving herself enough confidence to finish at the podium later tonight.

Bobana Velickovic (Serbia): The 26-year old Serbian has been very consistent in 2016 which has led her to the number 2 spot in the official rankings. The shooter won the gold medal in the 2016 ISSF World Cup held in Munich. Her consistency has made her a favourite to win above mentioned experienced shooters. Velickovic will be the biggest underdog of this event.
